Mary Ruth, named after William and Carol’s mother, is our flagship white wine. Mary Ruth and Donald Blackmon were cotton farmers on the Texas High Plains. In 1983 they diversified their farming operations and planted their first vineyard in County Line, Texas north of Lubbock. The family farmed the vineyard for eleven years, until a major freeze in the 1990’s took everything to the ground. They abandoned the vineyard and William decided it was time to move to the Texas Hill Country. Mary Ruth moved to Fredericksburg soon after to be close to her family. Carol and William remember how their mother was always passionate about art. In her later years, she became an accomplished artist working in pastel, oil, pencil and charcoal. You can see some of William and Carol’s favorite pieces displayed in the Hye Society Lounge. When explaining her art, Mary Ruth wrote “It is my intent to convey the essence of beauty, harmony, and rhythm that flows through all of nature.” We believe these words perfectly capture the spirit of Mary Ruth wine.

The first thing I think about when smelling this wine is fresh salty lemonade on a sunny day and daffodils. The Mary Ruth has a great floral bouquet from the Muscat Blanc in the blend but still has great complexity with a sea salt meyer lemon backbone and orange rind flavors. There’s a rounded texture to the finish to give the wine weight but it still finishes with a clean and bouncy freshness. It’s a versatile wine that can go with light seafood (especially shellfish) and veggie heavy dishes to poultry and even pork.
