Lahey Vineyards is an 800 acre family owned vineyard (the largest in the state) located in the far west region of the Texas High Plains in Brownfield. The farm was established over 60 years ago, though they did not grow grapes until recently. For it being one of the first years working with Lahey Vineyards, we find this wine and experience with them to be opportune. Overall, 2015 was a difficult vintage in the Texas High Plains where hail took out several vineyards. Carignane buds late in the season so the hearty varietal planted at Lahey survived where others simply could not. In spite of the weather conditions, our 2015 Carignane came in with perfect ripeness - though it was a very low yield harvest. There is a major thing to note on this west Brownfield wine, and that is the incredibly unique aromatics and flavors in comparison to the east’s; full of savory smokiness, richness, and bursting with fruit.
Sage, allspice, smoked meats and burnt marshmallows all uniquely envelope the nose. The acidity is triangular on the palate, with a steeliness at the forefront that leads into unripe strawberry, bright red fruits, star anise, & plum undertones. A smokiness is detected at the back while the lingering finish brings about an oak influence. Decant for quicker and more full aromatics and flavors. Drink now through 2022.
