The year’s Artist Blend by William Chris is an amalgamation of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Tannat. Previous vintages have been a traditional GSM blend, though in 2014 our winemaking team was inspired after a trip to the Sierra Foothills AVA where they tasted a handful of GSMT's (Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, blended with Tannat). The untraditional addition of Tannat ended up being the key to rounding out this Rhone-style blend, starting with last year’s Artist Blend. Enjoy through 2022.
Each year, the Artist Blend’s label has donned a piece of artwork. Both Mary Ruth (William and Carol’s mother) and William’s paintings have been exhibited on previous vintages. Then, in 2013, William Chris began conducting a “call for an artist contest” where the public has the opportunity to submit their artwork and compete for a chance to be on the next bottle. Our very own Wine Club Members then vote to select the winner. The artist is then invited to hold a gallery showing at William Chris Vineyards during our annual Spring Release Party. This vintage features “Archetype” by Rylie Caldwell, an artist who resides in Houston, Texas. To find out more about Rylie, visit her website at www.ryliecaldwell.com.
Richly tinted with a deep purple hue. Ripe, dusty blueberry notes on the nose are followed by tooth-staining, deeply extracted palate of dried, spiced game jerky. Rocky minerality, cocoa nibs & resin of black fruits are also experienced on the palate. Brooding and pensive, this wine is built for lots of development in the bottle for a long time to come. Pair with game meats & stews. -Rae Wilson, Master Sommelier
